September is Healthy Aging Month: 6 Essential Tips to Stay Vibrant and Thrive!
Did you know? Over 80% of seniors in the U.S. are not aging as healthily as they could, with many facing preventable health issues related to lifestyle choices! |
Here are the 6 most important things to know about healthy aging:
- Physical Activity: Regular exercise, including strength training, flexibility exercises, and aerobic activities preserve muscle mass, bone density, and cardiovascular health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.
- Balanced Nutrition: As we age, it's important to focus on nutrient-dense foods and ensure adequate intake of vitamins like Vitamin D, calcium, and Omega-3s for bone, heart, and brain health. Insufficient Protein Intake; Dehydration; Lack of Fiber; Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies are the most common pitfalls in senior nutrition.
- Cognitive Health: Mental stimulation through puzzles, reading, learning new skills, and social engagement helps reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. Did you know: The single most contributing lifestyle factor in cognitive decline is physical inactivity.
- Sleep: Prioritizing 7-9 hours of sleep per night supports memory, immune function, and mood. Older adults experience changes in their sleep patterns, such as difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently, or getting less deep sleep. Optimizing lifestyle for good sleep quality is important when ageing.
- Social Connections: Social isolation kills by increasing chronic disease; causes mental health decline; weakens the immune system and leads to depression and premature death. Staying socially active and connected with friends, family, enhances mental and physical well-being.
- Preventative Health: Despite the vast number of doctors, hospitals, and medications available in the U.S., many Americans struggle with poor health due to Poor Lifestyle Choices; choosing Reactive instead of preventive care; failing to invest time, effort and funds to health. By addressing these root causes and embracing preventive, holistic approaches, Americans can reduce declining health in their old age.
